Crafting For A Cause
This is a fundraising group that I created and began hosting in August 2013. Let me start by saying that I am not a member of or am I affiliated with any particular Autism association however it has touched my life in many ways. The statistics are staggering and funding for research, therapy, and family support is dwindling.
I’ve been knitting for about 4 yrs now and totally love it! What can I say I totally geek out when it comes to my knitting. :) My favorite things to knit are almost everything especially dishcloths, baby blankets, hats, and socks.
As much as I enjoy knitting for my family and friends I also have a huge passion for knitting for charity. I find it both fun and extremely rewarding. I donate any proceeds made to The Autism Society of America (for Autism Awareness) for which I hold 3 fundraisers a year with the help of my Ravelry group Crafting For A Cause. Our goal is to raise acceptance and awareness for Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
In an effort to raise awareness in my community this fundraiser was born. I live in a small tourist town rich in history and pride. Every Summer from May until September on the third Saturday of each month my town holds a sidewalk festival for local crafters, vendors, and businesses. Foot traffic is usually very heavy and a good opportunity for some positive exposure. So I reserved the date for August 2013 and began knitting my heart out. With two kids at home I opted for making small quick knits like dishcloths, washcloths, pot holders etc. I designed my first pattern, the Puzzle Piece dishcloth set (under the Knitting patterns tab at the top of this page) for the event also, as the puzzle piece is the official symbol of Autism. As word got out about what I was doing I received an enormous amount of support from knitters and crocheters who wanted to help! People from England, Austrailia, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, and all over the country began contacting me wanting to know what they could make to donate and how they could help. I received such a wonderful wide variety of items from scarves and stockings to shawls, hats, and many other wonderful items. Each item was sold for $1.00-$10.00 and 100% of all proceeds made went directly to The Autism Society of America! This years fundraiser was my first so of course I was quite a bit nervous but it went great! When all was said and done we were able to raise a little over $80.00 in the five hour period of the festival. We had an overwhelmingly positive response and many people stopped by to thank me for doing something like this to raise Autism awareness.
I also run a page on Facebook called "Ramblings and Randomness of An Asperger's Mom" to help offer some support and information and just some of my own personal experiences on the journey of being a special needs mom.
